Week 9 Reading and Writing

Image
Reading Overall I really liked doing these reading tasks as I think there is very insightful and show you all of the nitty-gritty details into making a game. Doing his reading tasks really open my eyes into how much work goes into making a game. It showed me there are so many aspects masses and thought that goes into even starting a game. Before doing any readings I did not realise how much work and time actually goes in to the background of making a game and I think it was very useful to learn all about it as it is great knowledge to know. I do think the reading tasks very much helped me in making my game as it showed me different techniques and ways of looking at a game that I feel I could apply to my game. It also gave me a lot of thinking to do when I comes to brainstorming how I won my game to look and many more things. While a lot of the things I learned about were quite advanced I feel like it did not go to

Review Week Comments and Feedback

Review Week Comments and Feedback Overall I am finding the feedback I get from my peers very useful. A lot of these comments are very helpful and definitely guide me into making different decisions when it comes to things like making my game and more. The comments that are there for me the most useful are the ones that suggest different ideas for my game putting in their input and their insight into what they think would look and act the best when it comes to my game. Overall I Think the quality of the comments that I'm giving out I'll quite good I feel like while looking at other peoples work and seeing what they're doing in makes me analyse my own project more and maybe add things that I didn't think of to my project. The different types of feedback structures and methods were very useful in giving other people feedback as want to follow the template given you will end up with a very well constructed piece of feedback giving not only

Unity Tutorial 08

Unity Tutorials For my unity work this week I continued looking at the YouTube channel that I did last week they have great tutorials on many different aspects of my game. This week I continued through videos three and four of their making a beginner game series. Following these videos was quite long and tedious as it wasn't adding much stuff to the game more so adding a lot of mechanics and background workings to need it to be done. I accomplished a couple of things like making multiple platforms, getting my player to go left right open down a lot more smoothly and finally I got my player to not be able to jump multiple times while in the air but only be able to jump once the player has hit the ground this aspect alone took a twenty seven minute to tutorial to do. At one stage I missed something and didn't know what as there was an error but luckily I went back and found what I had missed in the tutorial and got it work

Project Work For my project this week I learned and applied many new things to my project a lot of the things I did this week were quite nitty-gritty but had to be done in order to make everything run smoothly some examples of things that I did were I learned how to make my player not be able to jump on multiple times whilst in the air. I made it so that you are only able to jump once you hit the ground. I also made multiple new platforms at varying heights. I have some of them vertical and some of them horizontal I also learned how to perfectly match them up. I also learned how to make the movement of my character much more clean and easy to use I  used words and code from the unity input manager and applied them to make my movements better. There's not tons of things physically that I've changed but I have put a lot of mechanics and things like that into the game so now hopefully now that things are fully set u

Game Fun

Game Fun Through my reading this week I found a lot of things very interesting but in particular I found A theory of fun the most interesting. I found it quite insightful learning lots more about the details and psychology behind games. I really enjoyed learning about the different types of games for example type one games these are games that teach us about thinking for example chest teachers all about strategy and foresight in the game. I thought was quite cool to learn that some games that I love for example call of duty or actually type to games and focus a lot more on things like reflex and how quick you are. Something I found quite interesting was how important understanding the concept of fun is and that fun is about learning, learning different skills and strategies in a confined domain. I also really enjoyed how what I learned in previous readings comes into play for example the flow of the game has a lot to

Unity Work For my Unity tutorial this week I looked at some very informative videos aiding me in my process for my project. I found a channel on YouTube called coding in flow that and easy to follow tutorial for a a platform style game similar to my idea. As I got confused on my last attempt on starting the project I felt like this was a nice clean start to try again. I watched a good lot of quite long videos of him explaining how to set everything up he was quite slow and easy to follow along with which I found nice. I ran into hurdle when similar to my first attempt I tried to get my character to do something by pressing the space bar it wouldn't work. Eventually I realised it was probably because of my IDE so I downloaded the same one that the man in the tutorial had and then his instructions started actually work in my game. I got my character to be on a platform, I changed the angle of my camera to be what I wan

Project Work For my project this week I wanted to continue my project I started by looking on how to get my character to be able to jump and also to move forward after setting up the basics last week. I went to my Unity to tutorial to find out how to do that after applying the necessary attributes to make my character do so, I tried to press space for it to jump it would not work I had everything correct but for some reason it would not work. So I decided to start the whole project again. I thought to myself this is quite confusing so I searched out another tutorial on how to do it. I eventually found one that was quite easy to understand but the mechanics still were not working even when following his way. I then decided thought to myself it might be my IDE so after that I downloaded Visual studio online which took quite a while but I then applied what I had learned and it turned out that did the job and it worked. My ch

Project For my project this week I started to put my plan into action. Starting out the project is something that I found the most difficult it took a lot of time to grasp my head around setting everything up and getting more to grips with how to lay things out. But once I found out how to add objects and start that's when things started to get a little bit easier. I started by adding a couple of ground pieces to act like where my player is going to run. I  then added a cube shape from the game object section to act as a placeholder for my character. I placed everything where I wanted it and then started to think about how I'm going to start with coding. At first I thought about following it to tutorial on YouTube but I then quickly realised even these were way too advanced for me. I then thought that the section I had previously done on Unity tutorials section 3 was quite similar to what I want to achieve

Game Decisions

Game Decisions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3H8pQyyXxHg When reading this week I found many things very interesting in particular I found the video about flow theory quite insightful and I feel I gained a lot of knowledge that I have previously not had before the video. I really liked learning all about flow and how critical it is when it comes to making games. I learned it is extremely important for keeping the player interested and that using human psychology as a framework is a very good method when it comes to game design. I learned a lot about different aspects of flow when it comes to games for example the different stages that flow has like presenting the player with a challenge, making the player get into the flow state and then keeping the player in that state. I found it quite interesting as when playing a game you don't think of that much psychological intricacy but when making a game there so much thought pu

Unity Tutorial 06

Unity Tutorial 06             https://www.logolynx.com/topic/unity+3d I had a very good time doing these unity tutorials this week. I learned a lot of things that I did not know before doing them. Something in particular that I really liked doing was adding special effects and also falling down graphics it was very fun to see what happened when you added cool effects and all the different ways you could make your character fall after hitting an obstacle. I learnt also about using the animator function which is very cool as I have not used it before it is quite insightful learning about different paths and how to change the animation of your character. Another cool thing I learned about was adding different background sounds and music and also sound effects when the player hits obstacles, I found is very cool to learn as they did not know how to do it before after this I am thinking of adding a scary or eerie music sound in the backg

Unity Tutorial 05

Unity Tutorial 05 https://www.logolynx.com/topic/unity+3d I really enjoyed doing this tutorial. I found many parts of it quite interesting for example I really enjoyed getting a look on how to make the background repeat over and over again rather than copying pasting and dragging it across gave me a very nice inside it into how to do something more quick and effective when it comes to game design. I will consider using this technique when it comes to making my own game. Another thing I liked to getting a look into was adding a game over notification or pop-up. I learned how to make the farmer once it hit the fence obstacle for a pop-up of game over to appear below and for him to stop. I found this quite interesting as for most games this is an aspect that is frequently used. This is another thing that I am definitely thinking about adding to my game when I start to make it. I am planning on doing a platformer style game so this wou

Game Design Document

Image
Game Design Document https://blogs.geniteam.com/game-design-document/ For my game design document I didn't want to complicate things too much so after looking at the video in the reading task I decided to try to emulate his template. I wasn't 100% sure what to write specifically in each section so I just wrote similarly to the guy in the video except I tweet and changed it to the needs of my project. For example in his he said the heat there was no music needed but I was thinking if it wasn't too hard to add some spooky music to add to the experience of the game as it is a wizard based game. For the design document I decided to do it on PowerPoint as I know how to use it. I added all of my areas like my game flow, my summary, my mechanics, my controls and more. Hopefully I'm going to add more to it if I think up of more stuff and fully finish some of the sections. Link to PowerPoint:  https://tudublin-my.sharepoint.com/:p:/g/p

Games GDD

Games GDD https://www.gamedesigning.org/learn/game-design-document/ When it comes to a game design document I had not heard of that before reading this week. Whilst reading I found many aspects very interesting in particular I find a video about laying out the game design document very interesting. The guy in the video is very precise easy to follow but also did not complicating is too much. I found a very interesting how vital it is to create a game design document before creating a game as if you don't you could back yourself into many different corners and get confused as to what your goals ideas and layout is when it comes to your game. I enjoyed looking at all the different sections I should put into your game design document, while looking at the video I was thinking in my head about what I would put in every section of this document. It was very clear as to what to do for each section and whilst looking at it I r
